Wellness Tips for The Office

Did you know you could exercise or practice Yoga in your office?
Our modern office lifestyle is taking a toll on our bodies.  Key elements of the workplace—office politics, workload, time management, self-doubt and self-recrimination, remuneration, burnout, sitting at a desk all day and squinting at a computer or at detailed documents can be hard on our eyes, our knees, and our spines. In particular, “computer desk posture” can, over time, train our shoulders to roll forward and our chins to jut out. This, in turn, leads to other health problems or at the very least, chronic pain.—office exercise and office yoga, and eating organic and whole foods can enhance your performance and promote spiritual growth.  The number one thing you can do about this is take frequent breaks. Get up, rest your eyes, stretch, take a walk—just make sure you find some way to ease up on your body several times a day.  (Leila Easa, http://www.yogajournal.com/newsletter/myj_145.html)

In 5-10 minutes you can refresh and rejuvenate yourself for the remainder of the day, without having to change your clothes or leave your office!

Sample Exercises:

  • Office Yoga Sequence:  Deep Breathing (Yoga Breath), Chair Side Bending, Reverse Shoulder Rolls, Chair Back Bending, Chair Cat Stretch, Chair Forward Bend, Chair Spinal Twisting, Eye Exercises
  • Office Exercises:  Chair Squats, Chair Pelvic Tilts, Chair Leg Extension, Chair Dips, Water bottle Tricep Extensions, Bicep Curls and Shoulder Raises, Chair Crunches
  • If you have a stability ball, any of the above could be done on it to increase core strength.  Use resistance bands or tubing to do a short 15 minute workout.

A Yoga Teacher or Certified Personal Trainer can design a specific program for you and your lifestyle to help you get focused and assess your needs and goals.  You don’t always have to go to the gym to get and remain healthy!
Home and office based programs are more accessible for many business professionals today, and provide a solution for people who “don’t have time” to exercise and take care of their bodies.
Remember that 80% of what you look and feel like comes from diet!  The phrase “you are what you eat” has much truth in it.  Seeking out a certified Registered Holistic Nutritionist or a Raw and Whole food Coach will provide you with the tools and information to feel better, have more energy, and be more productive EVERY DAY.

So much love to you.
